About us...

Vladimir Nazor Library was founded in 1961 by the City of Zagreb. It included several libraries and reading rooms situated in the western part of the town and covered the area of 700 square metres.

Since 1969, the network of libraries and reading rooms constituting the Vladimir Nazor Library has been spreading continuously along with the expansion of Zagreb urban areas to the west. Some branch libraries were relocated and some were newly opened. By the end of 2002 the network of the Vladimir Nazor Library covered a total area of 2,701 square metres.

The collections housed at all Library's branches include:

  • 249,828 book volumes (111,614 fiction items, 76,212 children books, 50,238 scientific and 11,762 reference books)
  • 79 periodical titles and over 25,500 of non-book items (CD-ROMs, toys, games, musical and video material etc.)
  • 311 works of art (Vladimir Nazor Gallery)

Over the year the Library on the average provides services to over 44,000 members and 500,000 users who yearly lend about 800,000 items.

The Library received numerous awards and acknowledgments for its work and contribution to educational and cultural development.


Services
Most items from the Library's collection are on open access. In addition to copies of books available for borrowing, the Library offer use of the reading rooms where you can view material that cannot be borrowed, such as reference literature, protected and rare books and newspapers.

The Library provides a photocopy service for the protected items, the users can read magazines, daily and weekly newspapers, they can surf Internet, etc.

The users can reserve material in advance of their visit.


E-catalogue
The users can search the Library database, CD-ROM collections covering different areas of interest, school children and students can search reference literature for seminars, papers and graduation theses as well as any other material they are unable to find elsewhere.


Libraries for Children
The libraries for children houses collections of children's books, picture books, comic books as well as a collection of materials such as toys and games that support children's personal interests.

Books and picture books in the German language are available for borrowing.

Most popular titles from "Stripoteka" comic books can be viewed in the reading rooms, but you cannot borrow them.

The libraries and departments aimed at leisure time of children and young adults, offer also a full range of programmes and educational activities for preschoolers and schoolers: storytime, creative play rooms and workshops, use of computer stations, Internet surfing...


Programmes
The libraries in the network offer programmes to users of all age groups: discussions, lectures, debating societies, exhibitions of books and Library materials as well as art exhibitions and displays (Vladimir Nazor Gallery). There is also a number of programmes for children and young adults: storytime, creative play rooms and workshops, lectures, etc.


Vladimir Nazor Gallery
The Gallery offers a programme of art exhibitions, thematic displays and performances. A number of paintings and illustrations from the collection is used for decoration of our premises, and the users can view them whenever they visit us.
